Oil Globule Diameter (min-max in mm): 0.05 - 0.25
Yolk: Segmented
Chorion: Pustules on inner surface
Egg/Embryo Pigment: none,
Pigment Diagnostics:
Diagnostic Characters: Oil globules coalesce to 2 in late stage (1 at each equatorial pole), lack of pigmentation in late-stage eggs

LARVAE INFORMATION

Hatch Size (min-max in mm SL):
Preanal Length (%SL): 81 - 90
Flexion Length (in mm SL):
Length at Transformation (in mm SL):
Fin Development Sequence: Caudal, dorsal, anal, pectorals, pelvics
Larval Pigment Regions: In each developmental larval stage, pigment is present in the regions listed below
(click for pigment regions)
Yolk-sac: caudal,
Preflexion: mouth, cheek, isthmus, dorsal gut, lateral gut, dorsal, ventral, mediolateral,
Flexion: mouth, crown, nape, cheek, isthmus, dorsal gut, lateral gut, dorsal, ventral, mediolateral,
Postflexion: mouth, crown, nape, cheek, isthmus, dorsal gut, lateral gut, ventral gut, caudal finfold, dorsal, ventral, mediolateral, caudal,
Juvenile: mouth, crown, nape, cheek, isthmus, dorsal gut, lateral gut, ventral gut, caudal finfold, dorsal, ventral, mediolateral, caudal,
Pigment Diagnostics: Distinguished from other bathylagids with linear series of smaller melanophores by: posterior gut melanophores larger and fewer, anterior region of gut lacks pigment, epaxial myomere pigment series limited to posterior region. Distinguished from Bathylagus pacificus by: series of melanophores as opposed to isolated spots
Diagnostic Characters: Eye stalks. Distinguished from other bathylagids with linear series of smaller melanophores by: posterior gut melanophores larger and fewer, anterior region of gut lacks pigment, epaxial myomere series limited to posterior region, fin rays form in finfold away from body margin. Distinguished from Melanolagus bericoides by: small M. bericoides larvae are unavailable but presumably eye stalks are longer in M. bericoides at comparable stages. Distinguished from B. pacificus by: series of melanophores as opposed to isolated spots
