LARVAE INFORMATION

Hatch Size (min-max in mm SL): <5.5
Preanal Length (%SL): 43 - 45
Flexion Length (in mm SL): 9.6 - 20.0
Length at Transformation (in mm SL): 28.0 - 38.0
Fin Development Sequence: Caudal, pectorals, anal, dorsal, pelvics
Larval Pigment Regions: In each developmental larval stage, pigment is present in the regions listed below
(click for pigment regions)
Yolk-sac:
Preflexion: isthmus, dorsal gut, lateral gut, pectoral fin, dorsal, ventral, caudal,
Flexion: isthmus, dorsal gut, lateral gut, pectoral fin, dorsal, ventral, mediolateral, caudal,
Postflexion: crown, isthmus, dorsal gut, lateral gut, pectoral fin, ventral, mediolateral, caudal,
Juvenile: mouth, crown, cheek, isthmus, dorsal gut, lateral gut, dorsal finfold, caudal finfold, ventral, mediolateral, caudal,
Pigment Diagnostics: 2-3 large melanophores on dorsal gut surface followed by a space then 3-4 additional melanophores in preflexion and flexion. 4-12 dorsal midline melanophores in preflexion, become 3-5 embedded melanophores above and below the notochord on the caudal peduncle in postflexion. 9 diamond-shaped connected patches stretch across the body dorsally, ending in a crescent shape on hypural region that extends into caudal fin in transformation.
Diagnostic Characters: Distinguished from Lumpenus spp. by: break in spacing of melanophores on the dorsal gut and irregularly spaced row of embedded melanophores above and below notochord on the caudal peduncle in preflexion and flexion larvae.
